Corn Snake

If you see a snake that has red blotches and is orange and yellow with a checker board pattern on the belly you are looking at a corn snake.  These delicate and shy snakes are mostly active at night when they feed on rats, lizards, birds, and bird eggs. Corn snakes live in dense forests and hide in logs, abandoned woodpecker nests, and sometimes the foundation of your house.

There is no need to kill this snake because all your going to do have one less snake to control the rat population around your house. Corn snakes are actually quite docile and I even keep one as a pet.

Black Racer

(clouber constrictor)

Black Racers are not the most aggressive snake in the world, but if  you live in southern states like Florida, then they are the most common type of snake you see.  If you're the type of person I am and you want to keep a black racer then you better be ready to wash the blood off your hands when they bite you.

When I catch a black racer I know better than to keep it. All they do is bite so they DO NOT make good pets at all. They eat a variety of things like lizards, mice, and even other snakes, if they are big enough. These snakes are found around your house even if you live in a neighborhood.  You may come across them in shrubs or slithering on the ground.

Ribbon Snake

(Thamnophis Sauritas)

If you live on a lake, river, or swamp, and you have seen a snake that is two or three feet, thin, and is brown with distinctive yellow stripes, you are more than likely looking at a ribbon snake. These snakes are very common around bodies of fresh water.

Subspecies: Eastern, Blue striped, Peninsula, Northern.

Habitat: wet meadows, marshes, bogs, ponds, weedy shorelines, swamps, rivers, and shallow streams.

Diet: frogs, salamanders, and small fish.

May be confused with garter snakes.

Ringneck Snake

Rat Snake

Copperhead

Found under the dining hall boardwalk at summer camp. "Copperheads are my favorite snakes.  I like how they look.  I can't wait until I'm 18, so I can get my venomous reptiles permit."

"Best garter snake I ever caught"
